The Davao airport bombing took place on the afternoon of 4 March 2003. A bomb was placed in a box or bag om a covered waiting shelter just outside the airport terminal. The bomb blew off the shelter's roof panels, and shrapnel from the bomb blast tore into those waiting in or near the shelter. Twenty-two people were killed and 143 injured. (Photo © Reuters)

 

21 vacationers were kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf from the Sipadan Resort in Malaysia on 23 April 2000

 

Martin and Gracia Burnham were two of the 24 people kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf from the Dos Palmas Resort in Palawan on 27 May 2001. After 377 days in captivity, Gracia was rescued by members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in Basilan while Martin and another victims were hit and killed.

 

Gracia went back to the United States and established the Martin and Gracia Burnham Foundation. She also authored two books based from her experiences.
